THE WINDS OF TIME

Cover by Richard M. Powers.

"They had slept for 15,000 years. But they were men. Nevertheless it was a fantastic experience for Wes Chase to discover them while on a casual fishing trip. It was a long time before they were able to explain to Wes why they were on earth and what they needed. It was even longer before Wes conquered his horror and decided he could help them in their mission to bring peace to the universe. When Wes finally found the daring answer to their problems, he realized that he would have to leave his own life behind and go with them into the future and the winds of time."

HERETICS OF DUNE

Cover by Abe Echevarria.
"From Dune to Rakis to Dune, the wheel turns full circle. From burning desert to green and fertile land and on again to burning desert, the cycle is complete. The people of the scattering are returning. Amongst them, mysterious and threatening, are the women who call themselves the Honoured Matres, adepts of an ecstatic cult. And on Rakis, become Dune, an ancient prophecy is fulfilled with the coming of the she-seer, Sheena."

SPACE STORIES, DECEMBER 1952

Artwork by Earle Bergey.

I can't help but admire the reserved tastefulness of this cover. At a time when most females appearing on pulp magazine covers were in a state of undress, wearing see-through or barely-there space bikini, or in peril of the most ridiculous nature (at the hands of an equally improbable fiend) this painting - by Earle K. Bergey (who painted precisely those things) may have seemed bland in its day, but is all the more outstanding today.
